Queen Of Hearts, But Not Mine!

Went out 7/20/2014 with Calvin & Glen on the Queen of Hearts out of Pillar Point Harbor (Half Moon Bay).  The quick & dirty?  We limited out, but 50% of the fish could fit in your hand, and more like 75% of the fish were black & blue rock cod.  Get the title yet?  Ankeny Street and Tigerfish still rule this guys heart!

These fish were on the large size.  And only 4 lings caught that day for 20+ people.  The whole reason we wound up going was that I called the day before & asked what their scores were like Saturday.  Apparently they managed 36 lings for 24 people.  Amazing!  Unfortunately we didn’t have a repeat performance.

Calvin was using a generic dropper loop rig with 8-10oz weights.  Glen used a mix of those and the ones with plastic squids on them as well.  Also used whole fresh squid (they caught some recently and had it to share with the patrons.  Massive props for that!).  I was using a generic bala/ho d jig (4oz).

So really.  Lets settle this one quickly, since I have to be up at 6am tomorrow morning.  Testing something, if it goes well I may expand it out as an option!  Getting back on point though, to be completely honest, I wouldn’t NOT recommend the Queen of Hearts despite the disparaging title.  I’ve gone out with the 2 or 3 times now, and I’ve taken a limit of rock fish home every time.

That being said, the ratio of 75% black/blue schoolies in your bag is steady.  In some cases, nothing but blacks & blues.  Glen wound up with nothing but those at the end of the day.  And the average size leaves something to be desired.  So, if you’re interested in limiting out, don’t mind small/medium average size fish, and generally just looking for a guaranteed fun day out on the ocean: take a trip on the Queen of Hearts, you won’t regret it.  Captain is nice, deckhands have all been decent when I’ve gone out.

But if you’re looking for a colorful sack (vermilions, chinas, gophers, etc) I’d recommend hitting up the Ankeny Street or Tigerfish.  I’ve heard and seen good reports off the New Huck Finn as well.  Hulicat has a good rep, but I haven’t been with them since I was a wee little boy.

Here’s the video compilation of the trip:

If you’ve been keeping up with my videos on board these charters, you’ll notice quite the difference in general energy on this boat versus Ankeny Street.

Oh, and yea!  Calvin caught a rock sole like a bad ass!

And yes, for the first time in a long while, I paid a hefty blood tribute:
