Outfished.

Props to Calvin for the title!  Jennifer blew us out of the water today.  She just kept catching fish after fish, and we were ….slowly catching canaries.  Blah!

We went out on the Ankeny Street on Saturday for rock cod (8/23/2014).  Fished 40-80 ft of water for a boat’s limit of rock cod, a couple lings, starry flounders, and sharks too!  Was an exciting day, and as fun as usual!  I got to try out a buzz bomb lure on a charter boat for the first time.  Had to use a 5″ to get it to sink fast enough, and it seemed to work decently.  Caught a chunky gopher with it, and missed two big hits.  More than that, but just the highlights!

Anyhow, we all piled onto the boat a little after 7:30am.  I started with a buzz bomb, Calvin & Glen started with shrimp flies, and Jennifer opted for a swim bait (2oz).  Boy did that ever pay off for her!  At the first stop, on the first drop, she pulled up the first fish, and it was her first ling cod, and it was legal!  That was a lot of firsts, I know, but damn, insane!

You can even see the octopus hanging out of its mouth!  We didn’t notice that until later…and couldn’t get into the mouth to get it back out.  Boo!

The 2oz later turned out to be too light for everyone’s rods besides mine, and so they all had to switch back to shrimp flies.  Glen had a short stint with another swim bait, but it just wasn’t working (too light, not taking out line on the drop).  Didn’t seem to stop them from catching fish though!  Or the others using shrimp flies:

Jennifer though…put this guy and the rest of us to shame early on (she wasn’t wasting any time)

While editing video footage I caught this great candid moment:

Definitely my favorite picture from this trip d=  But seriously, both of those vermilion were fat as hell!

The crazy thing was she just kept pulling up doubles all day!  Calvin & I probably have the most fishing experience and we did the worst.  Least color of the day!  Now, I know what you’re thinking.  You’re saying to yourself “Oh, I get the title now, hardee har har”.  No! No you don’t!  This pretty much sums it up:

Now you understand.  d=  Anyhow, check out the rest of the video:

I did get a nice china:

And Glen caught 2 vermilions (breaking his black rock cod only curse)!

But seriously.  Look at Jennifers bag:

You usually walk away with a colorful sack on the Ankeny Street, but daaaaaang!  So jelly.  Anyhow, I’ve got work in the morning.  Enjoy the video, and here’s (seriously) a TON of unused photos that I should have used: http://imgur.com/a/g7Z5p#58  If you’re stuck at work take a look.  Should be 100+ pics in there of fish after fish after fish, and so many bent poles & tight lines!  Night ya’ll

  1. hi dennis, can you explain to me more about this ho-d jig? there are a total of 2 hooks total right? and you do not use a weight? looks like you had fun last weekend fishing! i went last month and kept getting double canaries. i’ve actually gotten ticketed before 🙁 but now i know exactly what they look and feel like. what is the depth that the ankeny street takes you to? <100 feet? thanks so much!

    1. Oh man, I’m scared to even ask what the fine was for canaries… is it per fish? @_@

Hod jigs are just generic bala jigs:

Here’s a video I recorded with step by step instructions on how to make your own: http://youtu.be/N9QAdNKjY6E
They can be a bit of a hassle to make though… I’m considering making them & selling them on ebay or something. Let me know if you’re interested! They work crazy well
