Salmon & Whales Aboard the New Captain Pete

I took the day off to go-a-salmoning last Friday (Aug. 15) since I heard they were catching them literally right outside the Half Moon Bay Harbor.  I was starting to plan to go kayaking for them with Calvin, but then my mom said she wanted to go.  She asked if she could kayak out…?  Knowing her, noooo.  I’m sure she could make it out of the harbor, but the work only starts then!  Gotta paddle around to cover water right?  So I swapped plans to find a decent charter boat to take us out (sorry Calvin!)

Sort of wanted to try mooching, but couldn’t find a vessel I was comfortable going out on to do so.  After the Lovely Martha experience, I’m a lot more wary about just picking any old boat, even if recommended… The Wacky Jacky captain recommended them, but I later noticed they’re harbor neighbors sooo…take that as you will.

Anyways, you can look that post up if you’re curious exactly how atrocious that trip was.  I finally settled on trying to call the New Captain Pete to check them out.  I seemed to have caught him right as he was fishing, and he had to put down the phone for a short while to get his anglers around some kelp.  Kind of awkward at first, but once everything settled down we had a good chat and scheduled to go out trolling Friday.  Was worried since he said we were the only 2 booked so far, and I asked how many he needed before he’d go out.  He said we’d be going no matter what, even if we were the only ones.  Too good to be true…?

So on Friday, we showed up super early in the morning, signed in…and whoah.  We really were the only 2 paying customers that day!  There was a total of 6 of us I think…but 1 was the captain, one his son, and I think the other two were previous deck hands or something?

Empty cabin yo!

Pretty awesome to get a private salmon charter for only $200.  Don’t get that very often! 😀

Where I went to sit and fish with you
We were off of work, and the time felt right
Working all day, catching fish all night!
Okay, done playing with Yellowcard’s song.  Doesn’t really fit either, but its stuck in my head right now!  If you haven’t guessed it yet, this is going to be a Half Moon Bay jetty fishing report (W Point Ave. is a street near the jetty).  We went out to Pillar Point Harbor at night the last two weeks (once a week) to poke pole the jetties after work.  Unwind a little, catch a few fish, hang out with friends, you know.  Well, it turned out to just be Patrick & me in the end, but that’s fine!  More fish for us! 😀

Both days we went out, we didn’t hit the jetties until after 8:30pm.  Truly night fishng d=  We started off with squid on a carolina rig (1/2 oz – 1oz sliding egg sinkers above a 4/0 octopus hook snelled directly onto the main line).  First time I got nothing but snags.  Patrick did amazing though!

He started with an eel

We released it since neither of us wanted to deal with cleaning one.  After he just kept following it up with fish!

And then he scored a pig of a grassy rock cod!

It’s Not Over Yacht

Super delayed report.  We went out to Capitola for opening weekend, did okay:

Brown rock cod from Capitola

I caught an underling, but didn’t really get any fight out of it.  Was holding onto the BRAID line by hand for about 15 minutes untangling Jesse from my line… Incredibly difficult to do that with only 2 hands.  Urgh.  Anyways, underling, no fight, went back in.  Saaaad.

But then when we went back out Sunday…we caught only a couple.  Augh.  Got a bunch of kingfish, couldn’t get many lings to hit though

Kingfish/White Croaker from Capitola

We were out all day too.  Only got 1 ling to hit, and it was under sized:

A Halibut Day Aboard the Tigerfish

Image

“But dennis, you’ve been gone so long and you open with that? You should feel ASHAMED!”

Okay maybe.  But I still think its kind of funny.  Anyhow!  I was on the Tigerfish out of Emeryville this weekend, and we fished the northern San Francisco Bay for halibut & stripers.  Had a great time with Capt. Allen, his deckhand Matt, and the rest of the party.  I got a lot of video too!  You can find it below, or a link to the playlist at the end of this post.

Summary Fish Report Section Is Here!

Finally got around to it.  Very basic, very summarized.  Location, date, fish caught, a note or two, link to full report.

More work to be done on it, but for now I’m happy for the night :]  Enjoy it here!  Or click up in the top of the page, Fish Report (per location).  In the future once I’ve got enough trips, I’d like to have an area where they’re split by area instead of all lumped together.

Updates!

Sorry everyone, its been awhile :]  Been quite busy as of late, and many big decisions to ponder.

Going to cover a few things in this update.  Website updates, LA trip (foooooood, & where to eat), fishing in Captiola (on 9/8/2013).

As a heads up this site may move & be hosted somewhere that doesn’t flog your wallet before you can modify the html & css.  All old content will be ported over, and organized better!  May or may not continue to push a copy of updates here, or maybe just post links to new posts.  Either way I’d like to start having google analytics tracking to get a better idea of content that’s appealing.

So far what I’ve come to notice is pics like this one (http://i.imgur.com/vnzLL.jpg) that show a satellite image of the area + notes seem to be by FAR the most popular.  That being the case, I’m hoping to start using these kinds of maps more often.  I’m going to be doing some research and seeing if I can pull the gps map from my fish finder each trip.  That’ll include my path, spots I marked (only going to include this if they’re spots I find, won’t share anyone else’s as that’s their hard work), where I caught fish, etc.  Ultimately it would be perfect if I could overlay that onto a satellite image and work with that.

Also hoping to start keeping a better log of catches.  Hopefully I can have a table tallying up how many of what I caught by place and date.  Sort of like charter boat reports.  Not sure if people would actually be interested in it, but I know that’s something I’d like to see.  General fishing productivity by area.  Look for it in the future!

Gotta sign off for now, started this too late and need to get to bed!  Got some things I need to get to tomorrow that I can’t afford to put off any longer.  One other short note though:

My first video to break 1,000 views!  It happened today :3

How To: DSI Transducer On A Kayak

Guide on how to mount a DSI transducer/skimmer on a kayak is up! No drilling of the kayak required.  Here’s the video version as well:

This can be found in the How To section.

How to section!

Its been a long time comin’, but I’m finally getting it started!  We’ll now have a “How To” section.  I know I had to do a lot of scrounging around to learn a lot of the things I’ve picked up over the years.  Sometimes it was a lack of information, other times I found things weren’t a perfect fit for me and I had to mix and match.  You can reach it from the top of the page (“How To’s (Rigs, Set ups, Poke Poling & More!), and hovering over it will show all the sections once they’re live.

After years of trying to piece things together and make things work for me, I’ve garnered a great respect for people who selflessly take the time to share their experiences and strategies with everyone else.  Today, I’m finally following in their foot steps.  I won’t be able to flesh out every section I’ve outlined in the “How To” section, but I’ll be sure to finish at least one or two articles tonight.

See a section you’re interested but isn’t live yet?  Comment!  Email me!  I’m flexible on the order these come out at.  Don’t see something you want? Let me know about that too!  Maybe it never occurred to me, maybe I don’t know but could do some research!  Let me know what you want.  This blog was started with the intent to share my knowledge with other avid anglers :]

Ack

Really behind on posting. Went out on a salmon trip, and would never go on the lovely martha out of Fishermans Wharf in SF again. I’d suggest the Tigerfish out of emeryville/hmb for salmon, rock cod, and anything else they do.

Also went out with some NCKA peeps, did decently. I think I haven’t posted about last time I was out on the hmb jetty also, bah. Just been really busy lately, I’ll update soon!

See y’all soon!
