Half Moon Bay Crabbing & Jetty Hoppin’

Finally getting all caught up on these reports!  Went crabbing on Saturday by kayak, and was out hopping around the rocks of the north jetty at Pillar Point harbor on Sunday with Calvin & Patrick.

I decided I was done with those giant behemoths of crab traps from danielson (the metal foldable ones).  Just so heavy, bulky, difficult to deal with.  I’ve seen lots of kayakers running around with Promar collapsible traps (tr 102W, get the newer ones with escape rings).  When If first received them I was skeptical as to how well they would work, but after Saturday I’m sold.

Dungeness Crabs & Rock Crabs in Promar Crab Trap

Anyhow!  Plan from last weekend was to go out and catch a bunch of crab so we could make crab & corn chowder.  I failed to wake up early, and crawled out of bed around 7am.  Got to half moon bay around 8am, but didn’t launch until 9:15am.  Didn’t get all my gear ready before hand, so took awhile setting stuff up on the beach :x.

Finally launch from the old pier.

Nice weather!

I’ve heard there are occasionally sand dabs along the shore where you crab, but was both late and lazy.   Continue reading Half Moon Bay Crabbing & Jetty Hoppin’

2013 Dungeness Crab Opener!

But let’s be honest.  I’m not a huge crab fan.  For those of you following me, you’ll note that I pretty much have only 1-2 posts on crabbing…

But after lots of sighing and debating, I loaded up one crab cage Friday evening.  Wound up needing the entire Friday night to prepare since I was planning to fish as well.  Wound up not being ready until about 2am…had to be up at 3am to drive & eat breakfast anyway so I just stayed up…

We landed in Half Moon Bay around 5/5:30 am.  Packed everything down and paddled off!  Was so foggy, glad we had lights.  We could hear boats cruisin’ around us long before we could see them.  We headed out to the first stop, somewhere around the triangle.

Recent Ongoings :]

Yikes. Its been awhile since I posted.
Been so busy with work & other misc. projects. Started making a mollegabet bow recently too. I think since I last posted I’ve fished three times?

Went out to the bodega head jetty (the further, harder to reach one). The one with the cliff face that you have to climb…it was an interesting experience. I had a video of the way back up, but I seem to have lost it : Anyhow, here’s how it looked:

And that’s only part of it…we still had to hoof it to the farther parking lot d=

Half Moon Bay Jettaaayy

Sorry for the delay, been busy & sleeping really badly. Wake up in the mornings 2 hours after I aim to get up still feeling like a rock. Maybe I should really actually fall asleep before 2am for once this week =.=

Anyhow headed out Tuesday for a breather. Didn’t feel like continuing to work after work, and wanted something exciting so I wound up hitting up my shallow spot to see if I could expand my knowledge. Pretty much got skunked this time around, not really sure why. I think its because the tide was higher this time compared to last time I showed up…wasn’t bouncing in the same spots. Left with only 1 bite, but at least I landed it. Tiny little rock cod <5″. Threw it back and headed to deeper waters.

Despite it being rather calm in the harbor, it was a slow night. I did get to use my 1/4oz jig though, which was nice. Hooked into maybe 6-7 fish for an hour or two’s fishing. Not bad, but by no means the best ever. Here’s the catch of the night:

Half Moon Bay Pier & Jetty – How To Destroy Your Legs 101

Its been storming out here for the past week, though its finally cleared up these last few days.  Really wanted to go fishing starting the first day of the storm, I really need to keep a better eye on weather.  See the post on PFIC here.  Usually fish are out feeding in force before storms.  They’ve got to stock up on food before hiding during most of the parts of the storm.  And boy was it a storm.

20-30mph winds most of last week.  I headed out Wed or something (its late, and I haven’t gone to bed before 3am yet this week…) last week to try my luck after work when it was only 80% chance of rain.  Didn’t realize 24mph winds were strong enough to prevent breathing if you weren’t careful which direction you were facing.  I decided I’d better just take a short walk and call it a night.  Noone around, obviously, and the swell was pretty crazy for inside the harbor.  I wonder what a fish does if it finds itself too far from a cave to hide in when it starts getting rough?

Talked to someone who contacted me through this blog and answered some questions to the best of my abilities.  Didn’t hear back on whether they made it out Saturday or not, am curious to hear how the crabbing was for them if they did indeed make it out on the south jetty.  If you guys are reading, please leave a comment or send me an email! :]

Anyhow, went home and threw my bait in the freezer to use on the weekend.  Looked like this past Sunday would suddenly clear up for a few hours in the evening.  Couldn’t help myself come Saturday when it cleared up slightly, and headed out around 12pm for a few hours.  Really becoming bothered by how many people are showing up there.  Not sure if its just because of crabbing season, or its just becoming more well known, but there are quite a few crabbers these days.  Not as crowded as the day after thanksgiving, but still very little room to crab if that’s what you wanted to do.  On the other hand there seemed to be quite a few crab around.  Most people had 2-3 from what I saw.  Someone even had maybe 3 or 4 large dungeness crab.

Only pro to having so many people around is you sometimes see really weird things.  Like this woman who pulled up a live shrimp

Half Moon Bay Crabbing!

Sorry for the delay!  Had to have a root canal once I got back from the cruise…Blah.

Whole point of going out there was because I was about to head home a day or two early to prepare for hte cruise.  I had been mentioning my crabbing successes to my mom and she asked if I could bring some crab home.  Had been sleeping kind of weird lately and wasn’t tired Tuesday night even though I hadn’t slept the day before.  Decided to just go out and fish that evening since the low tide peaked around 8 meaning I could be out there all night until the morning maybe 10am and I should have plenty of crab by then.

Got to the pier around 730 pm-ish?  I can’t remember.  For the first time I saw two wardens out there.  Curious, I asked what they were looking for (they had been walking in front of me the whole way towards the pier and were looking around on both sides of the jetty).  Apparently there was a report of a bird that got wrapped up in fishing line and they were trying to help it.  Didn’t see them find it and they were gone within 10 minutes to look for it elsewhere.

Real fishermen don’t need bait!

So I did manage to wake up early in the morning to get out to Ft. Point pier, even managed to get Bill to go with me.  Got even luckier and managed to get the parking spot closest the to pier! But before that…I gps’d myself to the wrong place.  Had to pull over and look at maps to figure out where we were @_@  Readjusted course and then made it there.

Climbed out of the car, and boy was it kinda wet and cold…  Was a pretty foggy day, and I forgot to check the weather last night.  Headed to the trunk to grab my stuff.  I was pretty excited, I found some cheap salmon heads to use as crab bait, and I had mussels to fish on hi-lo rigs for perch and rock cod.

And then I realized today was a terrible terrible day.  I’d left all my bait, ALL OF IT, back home in the fridge…
