Kayaking, Poke poling, And Spelunking

edit: some images missing. Imgur sucks :[ hopefully they’ll load eventually

Together they make a wholesome memorial day weekend!

That was one long long weekend. I learned my lesson, I can handle about 4 activities for a 3 days weekend tops…I’m exhausted. I woke up this morning and literally could not function until I’d finished an entire energy drink. I was done with a second, and working on a cup of coffee before 11am.

Anyhow! I set off to go fishing at Steven’s Creek Reservoir on saturday (5/25/2013). Was hoping I’d be able to land a few bass and lots of crappie. Thought it might be the either right before or during spawning, but I might’ve been wrong. Didn’t get many bites, in fact much less then I had found from shore in winter even.
Was supposed to meet up with a couple friends, but some bailed. In the end it was Kara, Ying, Greg & me.

Going to pause here and note an odd thing that happened… Continue reading Kayaking, Poke poling, And Spelunking

Crappie master with a Kastmaster

Edit: having trouble with images showing up when embedding in post.  wtf -.-

Had nothing to do really on Monday around 5pm when we got back from the cruise.  Had to wait at the parents house until Tuesday at least for my root canal (Tuesday morning).  Decided to go try my luck out at Steven’s Creek Reservoir again.  Still searching for that decent sized bass.  Or maybe another carp, those things put up quite a fight on 6lb line.  Pretty damn exciting, playing the fish right on the edge of your line’s limit.

Ran over to fisherman’s warehouse (google maps) to grab some more kastmasters since I ran out last time I was there.  Had a few tiny ones, like 3/16th or something remarkably small, but I don’t use those anymore.  Caught too many 1-2″ baby fish and felt bad about it.  Went in and grabbed a different kastmaster this time.  They didn’t seem to have the 5/8 size anymore, or I didn’t look hard enough…Sunset was around 6:40pm so I wanted to get going to the lake quick (they close at sundown :[)
This is the model I’ve found that does the best: http://www.amazon.com/Acme-Kastmaster-Teaser-Chrome-4-Ounce/dp/B000LF2NMM

Blue on one half, chrome on the other.  1/4oz, and make sure it has that little white tuft at the bottom.  That seems to make a HUGE difference.  In the water it certainly helps the lure be more easily seen, especially in stained water that’s in the reservoir.  It also looks kind of like a tail, or the flash of a fish.  Either way in my experience it increases the bite rate significantly.  I wouldn’t say double, but I really wouldn’t be caught without one from now on.

Anyhow popped out of the car (parked on the side of the road) and rushed over to the start of the dam (where the cement and dirt meet) and started fishing from there.  Started tossing lures from top water retrieves all the way down to bouncing them off the bottom (which seems to be where all the fish in this lake are) before moving further along the dam.  Didn’t get anything until about 3/4 of the way down the damn (towards the other side of the lake).  Hooked into a few crappies.  Dropped the first one as soon a I landed it and didn’t get a picture.  I’m starting to get some really nice size crappie, in the 6-8inch range these days.
Here’s a few I caught on the dam:

Bass Master

Finally! All caught up after this post! :3  Going to span over a few days as I accidentally deleted all the photos but 2… Still learning my smart phone.  If I upload something in a certain way, when I try to delete it off my phone I get presented with two options.  Unfortunately the form is blank, so I have to guess.  I guessed wrong and didn’t realize until after…

After all this success in lakes with light tackle it really got me hooked.  And I kept reading about Shadow Cliff lakes being awesome so I decided I should run out there to try catfishing.  Sucks that its all the way in Pleasanton, about an hour away.  Went out and was planning to try crawdads, but they were all too large at Marina Foods, so I just picked up some chicken livers again instead.  Man did they smell this time.  No bites though.  I even fished to the left of the marina where all the forums said was the place to be.  Maybe I just didn’t stay long enough, but the park closed at 6 or 7 and I had to move my car out so I just called it quits.

While I was there I managed to catch 1 baby bass about as large as your thumb.  On a lure about the same size as it @_@  Kinda ridiculous.  Not even a nibble on my chicken livers, gave up on that.  Went to the dock a little ways down the shore line and tossed a little minnow/anchovy lure and saw maybe 200 baby trout and bass.  Was amazing.  No real sized fish though, and time was up, so I packed it up.

Next day I went to Steven’s Creek Reservoir again and started tossing a smaller lure in hopes of more hook ups.  Tried the spot I was at a week or so ago with no luck.  Fished my way all the way down to the trees at the end of the lake where I caught 4 baby bass.  All the same size as your thumb. Felt kind of bad, but even at that size they put up quite a fight.  Couldn’t find any larger ones.

Looks big doesn’t it?! So good with a camera. Its actually the same size as your thumb
