Capitola – A Land Sea of Opportunities

Capitola Pier
We meet again, Capitola

Last Tuesday, 9/9/2014, marked the first time I returned to the site of the [yacht] incident.  For a variety of reasons, I hadn’t been back to Capitola since.  But here we were.  Kara’s brother Andrew had come all the way from Colorado, and by god, we were going to put him on the fish!

We got there early, around 7/7:30am.  Didn’t see anyone else, but we later ran into 2 other Capitola Boat & Bait boats out on the water.  We weren’t the only ones playing hooky from work!  We started off by the Tank House reef looking for bait.  For reference, here’s a picture of the Capitola kelp bed map that Capitola Boat & Bait passes out: http://i.imgur.com/dpEHcZQ.jpg.  Kara had that feeling.  You know, the one where you just know there’s fish.  Like a fool, I questioned it.  But we stopped nonetheless, and well…unsurprisingly she was right!

Smack dab in the middle of aaallllll the bait fish!  Mostly only pin head anchovies jumping out of the water, but fun to see still.  So there we were, jigging away with sabikis (Kara opted to fish a shrimp fly, see if she could land just larger bait).  I think we had a size 10, and size 8.  We were using 1oz weights.  First fish coming up were small anchovies.

After a few drops we found out there were much larger, perfect bait size ones lurking below those!  Success!

We even pulled up some mackerel!

It’s Not Over Yacht

Super delayed report.  We went out to Capitola for opening weekend, did okay:

Brown rock cod from Capitola

I caught an underling, but didn’t really get any fight out of it.  Was holding onto the BRAID line by hand for about 15 minutes untangling Jesse from my line… Incredibly difficult to do that with only 2 hands.  Urgh.  Anyways, underling, no fight, went back in.  Saaaad.

But then when we went back out Sunday…we caught only a couple.  Augh.  Got a bunch of kingfish, couldn’t get many lings to hit though

Kingfish/White Croaker from Capitola

We were out all day too.  Only got 1 ling to hit, and it was under sized:

Final part of last weekend!

Playlist from last sunday can be found here:

There are videos of many of our fish being reeled up, sand dabs, dolphins, and seals!

A Dab’ll Do Ya – Part 2!

Sorry for the delay, I’ve been trying to let my fingers heal.  Been somewhat painful at work :[  Pictures from Sean (tons & tons of thanks for taking super awesome photos, you need to keep joining in) are up!  Album link at the end of this post :]

He was on the other boat, so many of the pictures are from their boat.  But I can at least go ahead and say we had a pretty good day:

Summary Fish Report Section Is Here!

Finally got around to it.  Very basic, very summarized.  Location, date, fish caught, a note or two, link to full report.

More work to be done on it, but for now I’m happy for the night :]  Enjoy it here!  Or click up in the top of the page, Fish Report (per location).  In the future once I’ve got enough trips, I’d like to have an area where they’re split by area instead of all lumped together.

super calm day at capitola, ca with seals

The weather these past two weekends has been amazing.  It finally calmed down after that initial spring – fall change.  Had a few weeks of rather high speed winds, but boy, when it calms down, it really calms down!  And that black patch is a bunch of seals!  Tons of seals, dolphin, and whales, but more on that later. Capitola Reef Kayak Fishing 5/4/2013

Before we get started, just going to leave this video here. Lost my phone, driver license, and fishing license on saturday, been kinda bummed. But this cheered me right up. Oh Bill Dance, you’re my idol d=

Not my video btw. Maybe half of the footage is new-ish (I’ve seen a lot of the old bloopers, and many of these were a great surprise :3)

Anyhow, moving onto the report! Also, all photos courtesy of Kara, I lost my phone :[

Woke up 2 hours late Saturday morning…meant to get up at 5am, woke up after 7 to a text message from kara asking where I was. Gah. Grabbed my gear, loaded up the kayak and ran out the door.

Picked up Kara and breakfast, and we were off! Traffic wasn’t bad at all, pretty much speed limit the whole way or more. Not bad considering it was like 930/10am-ish? Was really weird driving into Capitola though. It was sunny right up until Capitola. Then all of a sudden the world got darker, and it was pretty foggy. Stayed that way all day. Kind of odd, considering there was some wind (5-11mph forecast).

Anyhow, we got there and unloaded our gear. On my way to the bathroom I passed a young boy who had a nice looking rock cod (black or blue, didn’t get a good look). Was AMAZING for off that pier, 10-12″ easily. Kid was using a ball weight with a maybe 4-6″ leader beyond that. I don’t know the name of the rig, but its got a bit of a cult following. Anyhow he wasn’t tossing it out too far, maybe 30-40′. Odd to have some rock cod out in the open there.

Ready to go!

A nice little paddle out at Capitola

So the only reason I’m back tracking on this post is because…well otherwise I’d have nothing.  For now.  And seeing as I’m here not doing anything…  A note to myself though, I should really work on taking pictures before and during my fishing trips so its not a wall of text, then pictures…

Went out to the Capitola pier on 8/5/2012 with my brother and a work friend.  My brother and I showed up at Capitola around 6am and parked up on the cliff overlooking the pier.  Does anyone know of any other place with 12hour parking?  Every other spot seems to be limited to maybe 4 hours or less :

Was kind of odd too.  We ran into someone up there who was apparently $5 short…I had 1 quarter left after filling my meter.  Later when we got down to the pier we ran into him heading back up with another guy and all their gear.  Guessing they were on the waiting list for a boat, but there were no no-shows?  Either way he said if we wanted we could have his spot, it already had 3 hours in it.  At that point I’m not sure what confuses me more:

  1. that they got up early and lugged all their stuff down the pier just to leave?
  2. threw in 3 hours but planning on getting a boat and leaving?
  3. thinking we would want to move our car into their slot after he watched us fill our meter.

Anyhow after renting our kayaks we headed out towards the kelp beds to the left (if facing the ocean on the beach).  A few years back I had quite a bit of luck there catching 2 or 3 rock cod on a short drift.  When we went out this time though we couldn’t even get a bite.  My brother was drifting a halibut rig with squid, and I was drop shotting 1 anchovy & 1 squid lure with smelly jelly (anchovy).
