Capitola – A Land Sea of Opportunities

Capitola Pier
We meet again, Capitola

Last Tuesday, 9/9/2014, marked the first time I returned to the site of the [yacht] incident.  For a variety of reasons, I hadn’t been back to Capitola since.  But here we were.  Kara’s brother Andrew had come all the way from Colorado, and by god, we were going to put him on the fish!

We got there early, around 7/7:30am.  Didn’t see anyone else, but we later ran into 2 other Capitola Boat & Bait boats out on the water.  We weren’t the only ones playing hooky from work!  We started off by the Tank House reef looking for bait.  For reference, here’s a picture of the Capitola kelp bed map that Capitola Boat & Bait passes out: http://i.imgur.com/dpEHcZQ.jpg.  Kara had that feeling.  You know, the one where you just know there’s fish.  Like a fool, I questioned it.  But we stopped nonetheless, and well…unsurprisingly she was right!

Smack dab in the middle of aaallllll the bait fish!  Mostly only pin head anchovies jumping out of the water, but fun to see still.  So there we were, jigging away with sabikis (Kara opted to fish a shrimp fly, see if she could land just larger bait).  I think we had a size 10, and size 8.  We were using 1oz weights.  First fish coming up were small anchovies.

After a few drops we found out there were much larger, perfect bait size ones lurking below those!  Success!

We even pulled up some mackerel!

UPDATES?

Gawwwdd Dennis, do you even fish anymore?

Yea.  Well.  Kind of.  Fished a few times over December, but its been slower.  Been busy, tired, had other things to attend to…

But I’m back!  And wishing a happy new year t’ya ^^  What can you do in the winter?  Now that rock cod are closed to boat based angling, where will I go?  Here’s a hint!

14″ Bass From Lafayette Reservoir, CA

Trout fishing Mono County

So…I’ve managed to fall waaaay behind on updating unfortunately.  So we’ll start way back on August 28th with our fishing adventure on June Lake.  Going to keep the three trips as separate posts so they can be organized properly (grouping of posts and what not).
Just to back up and give myself a little bit of excuse (heh ^^) I’ve been pretty busy @_@  Reason for this one not being on time is we were on vacation that week, and I didn’t have access to my computer.  Soon as we got home we had to clean up the house since we had it fumigated while we were gone.  Also the morning after we got back we had a Farallon Islands rock cod trip scheduled, and that was just exhausting…and so it goes d=  Anyhow!  On with the June Lake fishing report!

Here’s a short clip on our way out there from David Walley’s in Nevada.  My mom wanted my Dad to take a picture of I think Mono Lake if I remember correctly…

Anyhow, we scoped the place out the day before and saw some cool stuff.  There were 2 boat rental places and we decided to go with Big Rock Resort (a word of warning, never rent from them…you’ll find out why later).  So we headed back to our place after wandering around town for awhile and got ready to come back the next morning.

All dressed and ready to go!

Next morning rolls around and we hop onto a 14′ aluminum boat.  Was pretty amusing leaving dock since my dad was having trouble controlling the boat d=  If you’re wondering where the fish are, head to the left of the Big Rock Resort buildings (while facing it).  Go past the reeds and don’t stop until at least you reach the little dock sticking out after the reeds.  Shouldn’t be more than a 5-10 minute drive.  Anchor off shore if you can, and fish the ridge between you and the shore.  All along the coast from here on out seemed to produce.

We were using 1/2oz of weight on a carolina rig with power pait marshmallows (rainbow colored).  This will probably depend more on the day, but the fish we caught were all suspended about 3/4 of the way down.  My brother and I fished towards shore, my mom fished away, and my dad was tossing lures in every direction from the back of the boat.

Before I forget, this is how we fish XD

Pretty stylish right? It feels nice too!
