Vermilion, China, and a Few Dungeness Crabs

Welp, this took longer than I thought to get out.  Turns out we’re leaving for Japan in 4 days.  Almost feel like it snuck up on us , even with Bill constantly griping about going to Japan soon and how we should be more stressed than we are d=

Its looking like there’s a chance I won’t be fully caught up before I leave town, so here’s hoping!

Here’s what I decided to take home from the trip on the Ankeny Street on 12/14/2014.  Could have taken home a limit, but I had to clean it all myself, and let’s be honest.  I can’t eat 10 fish on my own.  Anyone I know want fish regularly once the season opens back up?  Let me know, I constantly have too much.

Anyhow, this was in the middle of the chain of storms we’ve been having all through December.  We weren’t even completely sure we’d be able to go out until the morning of.  I think Capt. Chris felt a little guilty about canceling a trip a few weeks prior (due to insane weather forecast) but it turned out to be an okay day.   Forecast said something like 15 knots of wind and 6+ ft waves or something from what I saw.  But Chris decided it was game on, we’d give it a shot.

So I was up around 5am waiting to hear, and when I finally did it turns out I needed to go pick up some bait for him d=

And here’s where my ultimate downfall for this trip begins…   Continue reading Vermilion, China, and a Few Dungeness Crabs

Ankeny This, Ankeny That

Don’t you talk about anything besides the Ankeny Street these days Dennis? Well…ya got me. Wind/waves were up for so many weekends in a row, so I kept finding myself on a boat. Post after this is a decent kayak trip though! And after that hopefully a guide on how to make these famous hod, hodie, ho d jigs? Generic bala rigs (google up daiawa bala rig for an idea).

So for the July 4th weekend, I went out with my dear mother. Which is awesome. Basically combine the 10 luckiest things you own, and that’s what my mom is for any and all fishing trips! And for those of you following, my mom hasn’t graced me with her presence on a fishing trip in awhile. Besides the good luck, its nice having family around :] Anyhow, as you can tell by now, I was excited for the day! Twas justified by the end of the day:

Double Vermilion Rock Cod!

Before I forget, we were using 8-10oz weights all day. I used some 4-6oz metal bars as well, but generally that’s the weight we used. Used the normal dropper loop 2 hook rigs, and bars + teaser above.  Also, because I forgot last time, here’s Kara & Patrick with two of their awesome fish from the last post!

C-C-C-Cabezon!

Yuuuuup!  This guy finally landed that elusive fish.  My 2 year hunt finally came to an end on 6/28 aboard the Ankeny Street out of Pillar Point Harbor.

SF Management Area – 2014 Rock Cod Opener!

Woo, after months of waiting and pining, half moon bay is open to boat based rock cod angling!  Sucks it was a Sunday, but hey, at least its a weekend, better than May when it was a Thursday @_@

So I went about preparations.  Pretty tired of fishing with my legs while paddling with my arms… Very difficult to paddle and jig the pole with your legs.  Watched people in hobies for a year and just…god so much jealousy.  So I decided it was finally time to get one for myself!

I’ve now joined the hobie revo club d=  Finally, easy street & trolling here I come! ^^

2013 Dungeness Crab Opener!

But let’s be honest.  I’m not a huge crab fan.  For those of you following me, you’ll note that I pretty much have only 1-2 posts on crabbing…

But after lots of sighing and debating, I loaded up one crab cage Friday evening.  Wound up needing the entire Friday night to prepare since I was planning to fish as well.  Wound up not being ready until about 2am…had to be up at 3am to drive & eat breakfast anyway so I just stayed up…

We landed in Half Moon Bay around 5/5:30 am.  Packed everything down and paddled off!  Was so foggy, glad we had lights.  We could hear boats cruisin’ around us long before we could see them.  We headed out to the first stop, somewhere around the triangle.

Afternoon Paddle

Went out to half moon bay last Saturday, 10/26.  Was lazy and didn’t want to get up early to go… so I woke up at 11am on Saturday morning 😀  Hopped onto the computer and started doing playing some skyrim.

Around 2pm it occurred to me that I could totally just launch later…so I checked the weather, looked like it was going to be less than 5 ft, wind only 5-7 knots, so I started packing.

Launched around 330PM from the old pier at half moon bay/pillar point harbor, paddled out around the bend, and…it suddenly got pretty foggy!  I went out about half as far as usual and decided it just wasn’t worth traveling too much farther.  Wind was already somewhat up and I didn’t want to get blown over some wash rocks anywhere.  Hard to tell when swell is down & fog is in.  On the way out I passed an area that was only 9ft deep…I seriously need to stop cutting across the wash rocks :

Anyhow, I was searching for a certain ridge, but couldn’t find it.  I did find an area that would go from 38ft or so up to 25.  Hard to fish it though, a very small section.  Snagged up and lost a lot of gear, but did walk away with one chunky black and yellow rock cod :3

Half Moon Bay: A Buzz Bomb Trial Day

So yea. Been too long, been too busy to really catch up. Sorry, going to just let the trips between salmon and today drop into oblivion…here’s all the photos: http://imgur.com/a/FfMUC#0

Went out today to Half Moon Bay on my kayak. Wanted to really test out buzz bomb lures and also test my fish finder. I got an Elite 5 DSI chartplotter and it didn’t ship until recently. West Marine had a massive sale and I guess it was really good. My unit was back ordered for half a month or more. Jerry rigged my own mount for the transducer and the unit. I’ll make another post tomorrow about it coupled with my trip out to Del Valle Lake in Livermore.

Anyhow, here’s a short intro on what I sometimes use (though after today it seems like I’m going to focus on buzz bombs).

Covers dropper loops, shrimp fly rigs, and shrimp flies themselves. Trying to do a better job covering everything, still working on a better view for the camera.

On the way out I marked what I thought was bait on the fish finder. Dropped a sabiki to find out if I was really reading my fish finder properly:

No idea what these are. Kind of remind me of lizard fish, had tons of small sharp teeth. There were tons of these little buggers all over the place. Pelicans were dive bombing these. But at least it meant I was reading my DSI properly! ^^

Anyhow! Back on track. Also wanted to get myself catching fish on my mini (people call it barbie?) pole. And voila!

That was the biggest black/blue cod I’d ever hooked into! Barely fit into my net. Shortly after I cut the video I unhooked the fish, lipped it, got it out of the net, then it squirmed and I lost my grip…back into the water it went :[ It was over 20″ >..< I think the mini pole is too soft to properly hookset :

Oh also, one of these videos has dolphins in it (hard to see). A whole pod swam by me early in the morning ^^

Anyhow, best one I’ve found is the chrome+pink one in 4″. 5″ was nice, but too heavy for the light tackle I was running. I got some nice hits on it though. The 4″ brought in like 4-5 small rock cod that were also 4″…

Ended the day with 3 keeper blacks, all over 14″ and a 15-18″ greenling. Nice red color :]

Ran into a guy near the end of the day, we both fished the same area for a bit. He managed to get a HUGE black/blue, even bigger it looked than the one I lost. Also ran into Ariel (I think that’s his name/handle) on the beach. Was a pleasant surprise to meet up with another NKCAer. He hooked into two 12ish lb salmon, but lost them both during netting, they spat the hook! Man, that was sad to even hear about :[ He nailed a nice ling on the way back in though!

Went home and turned two of the cod into fish tacos :]

Sliced up the fillets into chunks and then rolled them in spicy taco mix (mccormick brand I think?). Threw those in the pan on medium/medium high heat with oil, and tossed some soyrizo (vegetarian soyrizo, trying to keep the calories down) in. Turned out pretty tasty, but not as crispy as the last time I made them. Last time I dipped chunks of fish in egg, then rolled it in a mix of panko bread crumbs (WAAAAY better than the breading you find near the taco mix) and taco seasoning. Fried those up and then mixed them with some salsa and sour cream.
One of my housemates who isn’t a fan of fish liked both, but apparently the soyrizo version tastes more like fish. Just a heads up for those of you out there who prefer it to taste less or more like fish ^^

HMB North Jetty – Cabezons & Large Rock Cod

Originally planned to make a run down to Pebble Beach in Carmel, but the forecast said 13mph wind by 12pm. Wanted nothing to do with that. I’ll hit up Stillwater Cove some other day.

Decided I’d give the north jetty at Half Moon Bay a shot. Wanted to get there by 630/7am to pump up some yabbies, but woke up at 9am still feeling groggy… Hopped into the shower, grabbed my gear and was off.

Parked the car at the lot for the north jetty around 10:30am and headed out. I didn’t bother fishing until I was at the last bend.

North jetty is the one in the bottom left side. I started fishing at the second bend (1st bend closest to shore).

There were a ton less bites than I expected. Somewhat disappointed, but can’t complain about the quality of the fish I did bring home. Bounced over an area with squid with no luck. Swapped to a 2″ berkley gulp shrimp, and suddenly FISH WAS ON!

Half Moon Bay Jettaaayy

Sorry for the delay, been busy & sleeping really badly. Wake up in the mornings 2 hours after I aim to get up still feeling like a rock. Maybe I should really actually fall asleep before 2am for once this week =.=

Anyhow headed out Tuesday for a breather. Didn’t feel like continuing to work after work, and wanted something exciting so I wound up hitting up my shallow spot to see if I could expand my knowledge. Pretty much got skunked this time around, not really sure why. I think its because the tide was higher this time compared to last time I showed up…wasn’t bouncing in the same spots. Left with only 1 bite, but at least I landed it. Tiny little rock cod <5″. Threw it back and headed to deeper waters.

Despite it being rather calm in the harbor, it was a slow night. I did get to use my 1/4oz jig though, which was nice. Hooked into maybe 6-7 fish for an hour or two’s fishing. Not bad, but by no means the best ever. Here’s the catch of the night:
