A Short Afternoon on The Jetty

Lets continue the catch up finally!  On 12/20/2014 there was an okay low tide late afternoon (3 or 4 PM) and I decided I’d give it a shot, check out the south half moon bay jetty and see how the fishing was.

Guided Tours – Half Moon Bay Poke Poling

So I guess I do guided tours & trips now.  Last Saturday was my first time taking non-friends out on an official tour.  I’ve wrestled with the idea in the past, and decided to push it aside for the longest time.  Finally went out and did my first official one this past weekend (non-friend group).  Jonas contacted me asking if I could take him & his family out poke poling.

Gave it some thought, liked that he was bringing his kids out, and decided I’d give it a shot.  It went pretty smoothly considering there were a total of 7 people, 5 of which were kids.  So I guess that passed my test, and I’m open to taking more groups out there, though I need to hash out some details first (group size, gear rental if necessary, etc).  For those of you interested, please head over to the jetty tours page where you can find all the details (once I’m done building it out).  Do note that what I teach is a variation on the traditional poke poling.  I use a normal rod/reel set up (20lb+ mono) which allows me more flexibility.

Anyhow!  Here’s some pics from the trip:

From the Half Moon Bay Jetties to the Mirror Waters of Capitola

super calm day at capitola, ca with seals
capitola water & seals in the background

The weather these past two weekends has been amazing.  It finally calmed down after that initial spring – fall change.  Had a few weeks of rather high speed winds, but boy, when it calms down, it really calms down!  And that black patch is a bunch of seals!  Tons of seals, dolphin, and whales, but more on that later. Fishin’ That Half Moon Bay Jetty

Was going to go out and fish with some NCKA guys around 2pm on Sunday, but something came up that I had to take care of…wound up not being free until 3:30 and was too late to go running off after them…

So I decided to just hit up the jetty and scope it out.  Haven’t been on the south jetty in months and months, figured it would be good to revisit it and brush up on my spots.
Here’s a quick video covering how to hook bait when going for eels.

HMB Jetty Fishing Bulk Post!

Been out fishing the half moon bay jetties three or four times. Only have pictures from two trips, other trips was busy/lazy.

Lost my glasses on one trip too :[ Right under the 51 marker on the south jetty, harbor side. A fly attacked my face, I shook my head, and my glasses went flying…Turns out they sink pretty damn fast T.T Tried for 10-15 minutes to hook it, but couldn’t find it at the bottom. qq
So we have this running joke that I give blood tributes to the jetty in exchange for a plethora of fish. Basically I get cut/hurt/bleed just about every time we go out fishing, so its become tradition. We also noticed that after I start bleeding the fishing picks up. Also there is a direct correlation in amount of blood lost to amount of fish caught…

Anyways! in exchange for my glasses (200+$…I pulled out all the stops since I figured I’d have it for years…just bought it 2 months ago T.T) I pulled up a cabezon minutes later. A 13″ cabezon. I have never been stricken by a want to poach so badly in my life. Dear gawd. $200 for an undersized cabezon…TO LOOK AT? VERY FUNNY JETTY. Here’s the cabezon that almost didn’t get away :

Half Moon Baaaay

Jetty fishing! Done a lot of it since mid Decemeber! All in half moon bay. Lots of rock cod. A few eels, a few perch.

Half moon bay has been getting a lot more pressure as time goes on from what I can tell. Not sure if its just because I’m visiting more often these days (multiple times a week) or if word has spread about how it holds lots of fish. I swear poke poling is on the rise. I’m seeing people wander all the way out to the 40 markers poking as they go.

Fortunately it still seems like most of them haven’t the slightest clue what they’re doing. They’re dropping bait down and all, but often you just see them letting it lie motionless for 10+ minutes on end. Even if something was biting, you’ve got the wrong spot if nothing’s happening for that long…

Fish are either ridiculously gluttonous or just really hungry. Or really opportunistic? I’m kinda drunk. This is going to be a somewhat rambling post unfortunately.
Here’s the album for all the fishing up until now (well…what I’ve taken pictures of at least): http://imgur.com/a/wvcfK

Half Moon Bay South Jetty

So yea.  I went out to the south jetty at half moon bay last night to test whether or not I really did have a better grasp of how to fish the jetty or not.  Also wanted to see if fish did indeed grow larger the further out I went. Parked outside the RV park around 9/930pm.

Realized once I finished the post I didn’t go over my set up all at once anywhere. 8lb mono line, 3/4 oz & 1 oz sliding egg sinkers (increased weight because of higher wind, swell, & current, less is better), and a 3/0-7/0 hook tied directly onto the main line (snell knot, wound 6-10 times). Today was using an entire shrimp on every cast hoping for bigger fish. Hooked through the shrimp 2-3 times in any fashion. Since I was fishing at night I doubt presentation was a big issue.

Didn’t get to try the sea side of the jetty.  Not sure if its always that bad at low tide, or was just too hard to reach at night.  Sure didn’t look inviting and seemed like I’d instantly snag up.  Hopped my way out to around mark 40 before bothering to try to fish.  I was sort of behind schedule, and had to account for extra time spent traversing the jetty (didn’t want to get home too late).

First cast out ~25ft.  Got hit as soon as I jigged back near the jetty.
