Treasure Island – Bountiful Perch

Treasure Island pier san francisco bay
Treasure Island Lady

So I went back to treasure island in the San Francisco Bay recently!  This marks my third trip out to try to fish.  Only this time, there weren’t 3 people blocking off the entire pier by casting all over hell.  Thanks guys, but please just learn to cast straight…

Anyways!  Went out on a Sunday recently.  I was originally aiming to get there around 6:50am with the sunrise:

As you can see, there was a low tide about an hour before sunrise.  Figured I’d beat the crowd and get there first and fish the tide as it came in.  Also the wind was supposed to pick up later in the day, so I thought that was going to be my only opportunity.

Turns out I snoozed out and woke up around 12pm instead d=  I later went outside to get something from my car and found it was caaallllmmm outside, barely any wind!  What the heck forecast!  So I packed up real quick, and headed out.  Wound up arriving around 5:45 PM.  Was surprised as I walked up to find not a single person fishing the old pier.

Happily I hopped down on the right side of the pier to try my luck with gulp camo sandworms (surf fishermen report these things working wonders for perch).

Didn’t even get a nibble.  Not even a NIBBLE.  You gotta be kidding me.  I used to poke pole with these things and caught rock cod, monkeyface eels, heck even an undersized ling or two with them.

At first I was thinking well maybe its just a bad day.  It wasn’t flat water, swells were kinda big… But then I thought, no, that can’t be right.  Perch live and eat in the beach swells, they couldn’t be happier for this kind of weather since it kicks up food and what not.

So I tried switching up baits to mussels and instantly started getting bites.  Seriously the perch on Treasure island are so spoiled…But I didn’t wind up landing anything on the right side.  Decided to try my luck on the left side of the pier:

And it was!  Finally started hooking into fish over here:

Crabbing Bodega Bay & Ft. Baker

Its been awhile.  Weather’s been not so hot, so I haven’t gotten out much.  Maybe only once or twice since the last update?  There’s a poke pole trip I made a little while ago on 11/22/2014:

You can maaaybe see the small shark I walked next to around 4:18, but the glare off the water sorta messed with the GoPro.  If I’d known I’d have scooped it up in my bucket to get a better picture.  Figured since I was filming I’d have it… guess not.

Some kind of shark?

If you’re able to identify this by this crappy picture alone, please let me know!  I haven’t a clue what it was, but it was cute :3

Anyhow, tide was a -0.8 ft. or so, peaking around 4:30 with a sunset at 5.  Timing worked out okay.  Was right after a long rain storm.  I was supposed to take some coworkers out on a poke poling tour, but rain was forecasted.  Hadn’t been out since Sept. though, so I decided I’d go rain or shine.

Couldn’t reach my favorite spot.  That’s the reason I was wading out into the open water.  There’s a little bar you can follow that’s shallower than following right along the jetty.

Anywho, did okay.  Not great, but made do with the few spots that were available to me:

Where I went to sit and fish with you
We were off of work, and the time felt right
Working all day, catching fish all night!
Okay, done playing with Yellowcard’s song.  Doesn’t really fit either, but its stuck in my head right now!  If you haven’t guessed it yet, this is going to be a Half Moon Bay jetty fishing report (W Point Ave. is a street near the jetty).  We went out to Pillar Point Harbor at night the last two weeks (once a week) to poke pole the jetties after work.  Unwind a little, catch a few fish, hang out with friends, you know.  Well, it turned out to just be Patrick & me in the end, but that’s fine!  More fish for us! 😀

Both days we went out, we didn’t hit the jetties until after 8:30pm.  Truly night fishng d=  We started off with squid on a carolina rig (1/2 oz – 1oz sliding egg sinkers above a 4/0 octopus hook snelled directly onto the main line).  First time I got nothing but snags.  Patrick did amazing though!

We released it since neither of us wanted to deal with cleaning one.  After he just kept following it up with fish!

And then he scored a pig of a grassy rock cod!

Half Moon Bay Crabbing & Jetty Hoppin’

Finally getting all caught up on these reports!  Went crabbing on Saturday by kayak, and was out hopping around the rocks of the north jetty at Pillar Point harbor on Sunday with Calvin & Patrick.

I decided I was done with those giant behemoths of crab traps from danielson (the metal foldable ones).  Just so heavy, bulky, difficult to deal with.  I’ve seen lots of kayakers running around with Promar collapsible traps (tr 102W, get the newer ones with escape rings).  When If first received them I was skeptical as to how well they would work, but after Saturday I’m sold.

Dungeness Crabs & Rock Crabs in Promar Crab Trap

Anyhow!  Plan from last weekend was to go out and catch a bunch of crab so we could make crab & corn chowder.  I failed to wake up early, and crawled out of bed around 7am.  Got to half moon bay around 8am, but didn’t launch until 9:15am.  Didn’t get all my gear ready before hand, so took awhile setting stuff up on the beach :x.

Finally launch from the old pier.

Nice weather!

I’ve heard there are occasionally sand dabs along the shore where you crab, but was both late and lazy.   Continue reading Half Moon Bay Crabbing & Jetty Hoppin’

Half Moon Bay Jetty Fishing & Poke Poling

Man.  So behind, this is basically a report from 1/11/2014.  Been so busy @_@  anyhow, on with the report!

Went out to the Half Moon Bay / Pillar Point jetties to get some fishing in with friends.  There was a 30% chance of rain going into it, but we were hopeful it would remain dry.  I mean, 30%, come on, what could go wrong?

So we arrived, slowly group trickled in (iirc, we had 3 cars of people, arriving at various times).  Headed off to the jetties and got about fishing.  Can’t remember the details any more, try as I might.  My toe might be distracting me…

Don’t fall on the jetties

Happened today.  Anyways, I believe we managed to end the day with everyone catching at least 2 fish?  We were pulling fish up all over the entire jetty on shrimp & plastic lures.  Learned something important, the only lure an eel will take is Berkley Gulp Alive shrimp.  Didn’t have any eel takers until I switched to a carolina rig with shrimp.

If I’m remembering right….we caught a few fish, then the bite basically died down for an hour or so.  Then it started verrrrry lightly drizzling.  And then the bite turned back on!  Nite & his friends started pulling up fish from the very first spot we fished, that had been dead for awhile.  Kara started pulling up eel after eel, calvin started pulling stuff up too!  Action everywhere!

Eels from Half Moon Bay Jetties

I think some other people caught some of these.  But damn did Kara ever pull up a fuck ton of eels!  At one point I caught a fish, got all excited, Kara just turned to look, and it fell right off the bloody hook!!!!

What did Kara do?  Instantly burst out guffawing, god damn it.  :[

At one point I was dragging this lure around:

UPDATES?

Gawwwdd Dennis, do you even fish anymore?

Yea.  Well.  Kind of.  Fished a few times over December, but its been slower.  Been busy, tired, had other things to attend to…

But I’m back!  And wishing a happy new year t’ya ^^  What can you do in the winter?  Now that rock cod are closed to boat based angling, where will I go?  Here’s a hint!

14″ Bass From Lafayette Reservoir, CA

Summary Fish Report Section Is Here!

Finally got around to it.  Very basic, very summarized.  Location, date, fish caught, a note or two, link to full report.

More work to be done on it, but for now I’m happy for the night :]  Enjoy it here!  Or click up in the top of the page, Fish Report (per location).  In the future once I’ve got enough trips, I’d like to have an area where they’re split by area instead of all lumped together.

From the Half Moon Bay Jetties to the Mirror Waters of Capitola

super calm day at capitola, ca with seals
capitola water & seals in the background

The weather these past two weekends has been amazing.  It finally calmed down after that initial spring – fall change.  Had a few weeks of rather high speed winds, but boy, when it calms down, it really calms down!  And that black patch is a bunch of seals!  Tons of seals, dolphin, and whales, but more on that later. Fishin’ That Half Moon Bay Jetty

Was going to go out and fish with some NCKA guys around 2pm on Sunday, but something came up that I had to take care of…wound up not being free until 3:30 and was too late to go running off after them…

So I decided to just hit up the jetty and scope it out.  Haven’t been on the south jetty in months and months, figured it would be good to revisit it and brush up on my spots.
Here’s a quick video covering how to hook bait when going for eels.
