Ankeny Street Salmon

You might say “well that ain’t a big salmon, that ain’t big at all Dennis”, and to that I’d say, takes a big man to catch both the biggest and the smallest salmon for the boat on the same trip:

A Short Afternoon on The Jetty

Lets continue the catch up finally!  On 12/20/2014 there was an okay low tide late afternoon (3 or 4 PM) and I decided I’d give it a shot, check out the south half moon bay jetty and see how the fishing was.

Vermilion, China, and a Few Dungeness Crabs

Welp, this took longer than I thought to get out.  Turns out we’re leaving for Japan in 4 days.  Almost feel like it snuck up on us , even with Bill constantly griping about going to Japan soon and how we should be more stressed than we are d=

Its looking like there’s a chance I won’t be fully caught up before I leave town, so here’s hoping!

Here’s what I decided to take home from the trip on the Ankeny Street on 12/14/2014.  Could have taken home a limit, but I had to clean it all myself, and let’s be honest.  I can’t eat 10 fish on my own.  Anyone I know want fish regularly once the season opens back up?  Let me know, I constantly have too much.

Anyhow, this was in the middle of the chain of storms we’ve been having all through December.  We weren’t even completely sure we’d be able to go out until the morning of.  I think Capt. Chris felt a little guilty about canceling a trip a few weeks prior (due to insane weather forecast) but it turned out to be an okay day.   Forecast said something like 15 knots of wind and 6+ ft waves or something from what I saw.  But Chris decided it was game on, we’d give it a shot.

So I was up around 5am waiting to hear, and when I finally did it turns out I needed to go pick up some bait for him d=

Crabbing Bodega Bay & Ft. Baker

Its been awhile.  Weather’s been not so hot, so I haven’t gotten out much.  Maybe only once or twice since the last update?  There’s a poke pole trip I made a little while ago on 11/22/2014:

You can maaaybe see the small shark I walked next to around 4:18, but the glare off the water sorta messed with the GoPro.  If I’d known I’d have scooped it up in my bucket to get a better picture.  Figured since I was filming I’d have it… guess not.

Some kind of shark?

If you’re able to identify this by this crappy picture alone, please let me know!  I haven’t a clue what it was, but it was cute :3

Anyhow, tide was a -0.8 ft. or so, peaking around 4:30 with a sunset at 5.  Timing worked out okay.  Was right after a long rain storm.  I was supposed to take some coworkers out on a poke poling tour, but rain was forecasted.  Hadn’t been out since Sept. though, so I decided I’d go rain or shine.

Couldn’t reach my favorite spot.  That’s the reason I was wading out into the open water.  There’s a little bar you can follow that’s shallower than following right along the jetty.

Anywho, did okay.  Not great, but made do with the few spots that were available to me:

Salmon & Whales Aboard the New Captain Pete

I took the day off to go-a-salmoning last Friday (Aug. 15) since I heard they were catching them literally right outside the Half Moon Bay Harbor.  I was starting to plan to go kayaking for them with Calvin, but then my mom said she wanted to go.  She asked if she could kayak out…?  Knowing her, noooo.  I’m sure she could make it out of the harbor, but the work only starts then!  Gotta paddle around to cover water right?  So I swapped plans to find a decent charter boat to take us out (sorry Calvin!)

Sort of wanted to try mooching, but couldn’t find a vessel I was comfortable going out on to do so.  After the Lovely Martha experience, I’m a lot more wary about just picking any old boat, even if recommended… The Wacky Jacky captain recommended them, but I later noticed they’re harbor neighbors sooo…take that as you will.

Anyways, you can look that post up if you’re curious exactly how atrocious that trip was.  I finally settled on trying to call the New Captain Pete to check them out.  I seemed to have caught him right as he was fishing, and he had to put down the phone for a short while to get his anglers around some kelp.  Kind of awkward at first, but once everything settled down we had a good chat and scheduled to go out trolling Friday.  Was worried since he said we were the only 2 booked so far, and I asked how many he needed before he’d go out.  He said we’d be going no matter what, even if we were the only ones.  Too good to be true…?

So on Friday, we showed up super early in the morning, signed in…and whoah.  We really were the only 2 paying customers that day!  There was a total of 6 of us I think…but 1 was the captain, one his son, and I think the other two were previous deck hands or something?

Empty cabin yo!

Pretty awesome to get a private salmon charter for only $200.  Don’t get that very often! 😀

Where I went to sit and fish with you
We were off of work, and the time felt right
Working all day, catching fish all night!
Okay, done playing with Yellowcard’s song.  Doesn’t really fit either, but its stuck in my head right now!  If you haven’t guessed it yet, this is going to be a Half Moon Bay jetty fishing report (W Point Ave. is a street near the jetty).  We went out to Pillar Point Harbor at night the last two weeks (once a week) to poke pole the jetties after work.  Unwind a little, catch a few fish, hang out with friends, you know.  Well, it turned out to just be Patrick & me in the end, but that’s fine!  More fish for us! 😀

Both days we went out, we didn’t hit the jetties until after 8:30pm.  Truly night fishng d=  We started off with squid on a carolina rig (1/2 oz – 1oz sliding egg sinkers above a 4/0 octopus hook snelled directly onto the main line).  First time I got nothing but snags.  Patrick did amazing though!

We released it since neither of us wanted to deal with cleaning one.  After he just kept following it up with fish!

HMB – Kayaking to Victory!

Aaalllrriightty, and that brings us to the kayak trip with Calvin!  Weather had finally calmed down to 2ft of combined swell.  A mite windy @ 6-12mph, but definitely doable.  In fact the wind was down most of the day until we started making our way back in!  Was a nice day on the water:

Queen Of Hearts, But Not Mine!

Went out 7/20/2014 with Calvin & Glen on the Queen of Hearts out of Pillar Point Harbor (Half Moon Bay).  The quick & dirty?  We limited out, but 50% of the fish could fit in your hand, and more like 75% of the fish were black & blue rock cod.  Get the title yet?  Ankeny Street and Tigerfish still rule this guys heart!

My bag at the end of the day

These fish were on the large size.  And only 4 lings caught that day for 20+ people.  The whole reason we wound up going was that I called the day before & asked what their scores were like Saturday.  Apparently they managed 36 lings for 24 people.  Amazing!  Unfortunately we didn’t have a repeat performance.

Calvin was using a generic dropper loop rig with 8-10oz weights.  Glen used a mix of those and the ones with plastic squids on them as well.  Also used whole fresh squid (they caught some recently and had it to share with the patrons.  Massive props for that!).  I was using a generic bala/ho d jig (4oz).

C-C-C-Cabezon!

Yuuuuup!  This guy finally landed that elusive fish.  My 2 year hunt finally came to an end on 6/28 aboard the Ankeny Street out of Pillar Point Harbor.

Limiting Out on the Ankeny Street

EDIT

Finally got the video up from the trip:

—————————————————————————

Been on kind of a month long skunk recently.  Ever since the capitola rock cod opener & the yacht thing…just had endless bad luck.  Can’t catch fish, things going wrong all over the place…urgh.

But I finally kicked it!  Finally felt at home on the ocean again :3

Even before this happened later in the day!
