Lets continue the catch up finally! On 12/20/2014 there was an okay low tide late afternoon (3 or 4 PM) and I decided I’d give it a shot, check out the south half moon bay jetty and see how the fishing was.
Its been awhile. Weather’s been not so hot, so I haven’t gotten out much. Maybe only once or twice since the last update? There’s a poke pole trip I made a little while ago on 11/22/2014:
You can maaaybe see the small shark I walked next to around 4:18, but the glare off the water sorta messed with the GoPro. If I’d known I’d have scooped it up in my bucket to get a better picture. Figured since I was filming I’d have it… guess not.
If you’re able to identify this by this crappy picture alone, please let me know! I haven’t a clue what it was, but it was cute :3
Anyhow, tide was a -0.8 ft. or so, peaking around 4:30 with a sunset at 5. Timing worked out okay. Was right after a long rain storm. I was supposed to take some coworkers out on a poke poling tour, but rain was forecasted. Hadn’t been out since Sept. though, so I decided I’d go rain or shine.
Couldn’t reach my favorite spot. That’s the reason I was wading out into the open water. There’s a little bar you can follow that’s shallower than following right along the jetty.
Anywho, did okay. Not great, but made do with the few spots that were available to me:
Where I went to sit and fish with you
We were off of work, and the time felt right
Working all day, catching fish all night!
Okay, done playing with Yellowcard’s song. Doesn’t really fit either, but its stuck in my head right now! If you haven’t guessed it yet, this is going to be a Half Moon Bay jetty fishing report (W Point Ave. is a street near the jetty). We went out to Pillar Point Harbor at night the last two weeks (once a week) to poke pole the jetties after work. Unwind a little, catch a few fish, hang out with friends, you know. Well, it turned out to just be Patrick & me in the end, but that’s fine! More fish for us! 😀
Both days we went out, we didn’t hit the jetties until after 8:30pm. Truly night fishng d= We started off with squid on a carolina rig (1/2 oz – 1oz sliding egg sinkers above a 4/0 octopus hook snelled directly onto the main line). First time I got nothing but snags. Patrick did amazing though!
We released it since neither of us wanted to deal with cleaning one. After he just kept following it up with fish!
So I guess I do guided tours & trips now. Last Saturday was my first time taking non-friends out on an official tour. I’ve wrestled with the idea in the past, and decided to push it aside for the longest time. Finally went out and did my first official one this past weekend (non-friend group). Jonas contacted me asking if I could take him & his family out poke poling.
Gave it some thought, liked that he was bringing his kids out, and decided I’d give it a shot. It went pretty smoothly considering there were a total of 7 people, 5 of which were kids. So I guess that passed my test, and I’m open to taking more groups out there, though I need to hash out some details first (group size, gear rental if necessary, etc). For those of you interested, please head over to the jetty tours page where you can find all the details (once I’m done building it out). Do note that what I teach is a variation on the traditional poke poling. I use a normal rod/reel set up (20lb+ mono) which allows me more flexibility.
Finally getting all caught up on these reports! Went crabbing on Saturday by kayak, and was out hopping around the rocks of the north jetty at Pillar Point harbor on Sunday with Calvin & Patrick.
I decided I was done with those giant behemoths of crab traps from danielson (the metal foldable ones). Just so heavy, bulky, difficult to deal with. I’ve seen lots of kayakers running around with Promar collapsible traps (tr 102W, get the newer ones with escape rings). When If first received them I was skeptical as to how well they would work, but after Saturday I’m sold.
Anyhow! Plan from last weekend was to go out and catch a bunch of crab so we could make crab & corn chowder. I failed to wake up early, and crawled out of bed around 7am. Got to half moon bay around 8am, but didn’t launch until 9:15am. Didn’t get all my gear ready before hand, so took awhile setting stuff up on the beach :x.
Man. So behind, this is basically a report from 1/11/2014. Been so busy @_@ anyhow, on with the report!
Went out to the Half Moon Bay / Pillar Point jetties to get some fishing in with friends. There was a 30% chance of rain going into it, but we were hopeful it would remain dry. I mean, 30%, come on, what could go wrong?
So we arrived, slowly group trickled in (iirc, we had 3 cars of people, arriving at various times). Headed off to the jetties and got about fishing. Can’t remember the details any more, try as I might. My toe might be distracting me…
Happened today. Anyways, I believe we managed to end the day with everyone catching at least 2 fish? We were pulling fish up all over the entire jetty on shrimp & plastic lures. Learned something important, the only lure an eel will take is Berkley Gulp Alive shrimp. Didn’t have any eel takers until I switched to a carolina rig with shrimp.
If I’m remembering right….we caught a few fish, then the bite basically died down for an hour or so. Then it started verrrrry lightly drizzling. And then the bite turned back on! Nite & his friends started pulling up fish from the very first spot we fished, that had been dead for awhile. Kara started pulling up eel after eel, calvin started pulling stuff up too! Action everywhere!
I think some other people caught some of these. But damn did Kara ever pull up a fuck ton of eels! At one point I caught a fish, got all excited, Kara just turned to look, and it fell right off the bloody hook!!!!
What did Kara do? Instantly burst out guffawing, god damn it. :[
Was going to go out and fish with some NCKA guys around 2pm on Sunday, but something came up that I had to take care of…wound up not being free until 3:30 and was too late to go running off after them…
So I decided to just hit up the jetty and scope it out. Haven’t been on the south jetty in months and months, figured it would be good to revisit it and brush up on my spots.
Here’s a quick video covering how to hook bait when going for eels.
edit: some images missing. Imgur sucks :[ hopefully they’ll load eventually
Together they make a wholesome memorial day weekend!
That was one long long weekend. I learned my lesson, I can handle about 4 activities for a 3 days weekend tops…I’m exhausted. I woke up this morning and literally could not function until I’d finished an entire energy drink. I was done with a second, and working on a cup of coffee before 11am.
Anyhow! I set off to go fishing at Steven’s Creek Reservoir on saturday (5/25/2013). Was hoping I’d be able to land a few bass and lots of crappie. Thought it might be the either right before or during spawning, but I might’ve been wrong. Didn’t get many bites, in fact much less then I had found from shore in winter even.
Was supposed to meet up with a couple friends, but some bailed. In the end it was Kara, Ying, Greg & me.
Yikes. Its been awhile since I posted.
Been so busy with work & other misc. projects. Started making a mollegabet bow recently too. I think since I last posted I’ve fished three times?
Went out to the bodega head jetty (the further, harder to reach one). The one with the cliff face that you have to climb…it was an interesting experience. I had a video of the way back up, but I seem to have lost it : Anyhow, here’s how it looked: Bodega Head Jetty
And that’s only part of it…we still had to hoof it to the farther parking lot d=
